Antitrust concerns with Microsoft Teams

Responding to EU antitrust concerns, Microsoft now offers global Office purchase options without Teams!

Microsoft has made a significant decision that will undoubtedly affect its global customer base: the discontinuation of selling Teams collaboration software as part of its Office 365 suite worldwide. This move, announced by the company on Monday, reflects a proactive response to mounting antitrust concerns.

Previously, Microsoft had taken steps to address similar concerns within the European Union (EU) by separating Teams from Office 365 offerings. However, this latest decision extends beyond EU borders, impacting users across the globe. The decision to separate Teams from Office 365 is not an isolated event but rather a response to a series of events that began with complaints from competitors such as Salesforce’s Slack. In 2020, Slack raised concerns about Microsoft’s business practices, alleging that they were anti-competitive and favored self-dealing.

These complaints prompted the European Commission to initiate an antitrust investigation into Microsoft’s practices. Despite ongoing investigations, Microsoft has taken a proactive stance by extending its decision globally.

For Microsoft, this move underscores its commitment to compliance and regulatory adherence. By addressing antitrust concerns head-on, the company aims to ensure fairness in the market and foster healthy competition.

As Microsoft navigates this evolving landscape, it remains focused on providing value to its customers while also maintaining a competitive edge. The decision to offer Office purchase options without Teams reflects a willingness to adapt to customer preferences and regulatory requirements.

While the impact of this decision may vary for different stakeholders, one thing is clear: Microsoft’s actions in response to antitrust concerns signal a new chapter in its approach to business practices and market competition.

So, are you getting a discount?

You will continue to have uninterrupted access to Teams until your contract renewal date. Upon renewal, your package price may fluctuate, and you will need to separately license Teams for each user who purchases a “no teams” package. It’s worth noting that for the near future, unbundled Teams is an option rather than a requirement for SMB customers, which is positive news.

Regarding Office packages without Teams, there are reductions in package prices:

The new Teams Essentials is priced at £3.20/month/user with a yearly commitment. To include Teams for a specific user, you would need to add this to one of the above new licenses, or for an SMB user, purchase the bundle (which is more cost-effective).
